Soldier On

Iím standing in three feet of mud,
Iím cold and tired and scared to death,
My friends, my brothers Ė all are gone,
I long for home with every breath.
The smell of fire and blood combine,
A deadly cocktail I must drink,
Still, maybe it will dull the ache
And take away the need to think.
I wonder, when the noise abates,
If only giving brief respite,
Why am I even here at all
In what appears as endless night?
At call to arms, I signed my name
But little knew what I would face!
My pride in country brought me here,
To this dark, sad and foreign place.
The only glimpse of hope I see
Is, if we win, the right to live
For all those we have left behind,
Then thatís the best that I can give.
With this in mind, I stumble on,
I wonít be drowned by hellís depression
But like a man who lived before,
My lifeís no longer my possession.
Someone else has worn these shoes,
Giving all Ďtil all was gone,
His promise of a place with him
Will give me strength to soldier on.
A blood red flower, a silent pause,
Forgetting not what earned that right,
Then all we gave will never die
And we will never fade from sight.
Perhaps our deaths will give you choice,
A voice, the chance to make a stand,
Donít let lifeís script be written by
The pen in someone elseís hand.

Love this poem submitted this week. It takes me through a journey I feel I have made myself. Very thought provoking, enjoy.

A great poem. The last two lines are especially poignant. How we all wish we could have control of our destiny.

All flotsam tossed around by the vicissitudes [If I've spelt that right]
the vicissitudes of life. Agree that the final two lines catch you draw you back with their potency...

The pen in someone elses hand - what a closing line - to a thought provoking poem.
