LAST CHRISTMAS

My grandson had so many gifts
For Christmas day just passed
Hand-held games, some popular books
And chocs that didn’t last
Just how he’ll find the time to play
With all his latest toys
Has made me wonder what “Old Nick”
Had left for other boys
I won’t regale you with the tale
Of Santa’s gifts to me
When I was just a ten year old
In nineteen fifty-three
Yet I recall the joy they gave
Those simple gifts of mine
And how I still remember them
In spite of passing time
Will he recall computer games
His Wii or PS4
How much they ate into his time
For hours and hours more
It seems that Christmas somehow lost
It’s meaning and its joy
Expensive presents take the place
Of Mary’s baby boy
The age-old story of his birth
In humble stable stall
Has been replaced by glamour, glitz,
And “goodies” for us all
Two thousand years and eighteen more
Since Jesus came to Earth
His gifts were priceless and live on
And still retain their worth
