BEHIND THE DOOR

I couldn’t really say for sure

What lay behind that old oak door

Set strongly in the garden wall

Of what was once a Stately Hall

But as a child, when I passed by

I felt the urge to stop and try

To see if I could lift the latch

Before my breath would start to catch

As thoughts of ogres, trolls, or worse,

A witch, who’d scream a vengeful curse

So every day I just walked on

Until my thoughts and fears were gone

Then came the fateful day I knew

I’d push that door and just walk through

The courtyard on the other side

Was once a place of love and pride

Though overgrown, it must have been

A place to rest and feel serene

A haven from life’s hectic race

And not at all the frantic place

Where I’d imagined ogres hid

To snatch up some poor passing kid

I felt relieved, content and more

To know what lay behind the door

We cannot stop, because if a single one of these men were taken and shot, that would be our fault - Edith Cavell
