Local Defence Volunteer (Home Guard) John Henry Green died on 7th March 1941, while on duty and in defence of the factory, which was also his workplace.

Forty-one people died in the German bombing raid on Ransome and Marles Bearings Works at Beacon Hill, Newark, Nottinghamshire.

His name is on the new Newark War Memorial and his grave is located to the right of the Warsaw Airbridge Memorial and just to the front left of the sundial. The stone and surrounds are red marble and the Commonwealth War Graves have added one of their markers at the foot of his grave.

I am doing further research but I am fairly certain that he was killed on the roof, when the first plane returned for a second run using its machine guns and that he was on duty.

There were a total of 4 runs over the factory, fortunately many of them failed to explode (because the Germans were using up WW1 stocks).

The casualties were all treated in the underground hospital (I am researching this for my book on Newark Subterranea) located, nowadays, under the main car park.

I have searched through the data but cannot find other references to a Home Guard man being on his local War Memorial, are we the only one?
